Women in Reconciliation 2024

Israeli and Palestinian women are learning to transform their narratives of fear toward an alternative framework based upon tolerance, understanding, and compassion.

Duration: 1st March 2024 - 30th December 2024

Overview

The “Women in Reconciliation” project trains 30 Israeli and Palestinian women in Musalaha’s Curriculum of Reconciliation to transform narratives of dehumanisation into a framework of empathy, respect, and inclusivity. They will be encouraged to step out of a mindset of survival and into a shared journey of reconciliation.

The Challenge

The Gaza War, since the events of October 7th 2023, has created significant barriers to peace, including social stigma for working with "the other," travel restrictions, and a climate of suspicion regarding normalisation. However, this context makes it more crucial than ever that the work of reconciliation continues. This project addresses these obstacles by providing a safe, intimate setting for women to confront identities, tackle psychological hurdles, and challenge the status quo together.

Project Activities

Reconciliation isn’t a single event - it’s a commitment to a journey. This programme requires a one-year commitment from participants and follows a structured process:

  • Initial Meetings: Israeli and Palestinian women meet separately in "pre-desert" sessions to voice fears and prepare for confrontation. These provide spaces to honestly voice their concerns and fears before they begin.

  • Desert Encounter: The entire group meets in the desert to engage in trust-building exercises and learn about the "Stages of Reconciliation" and active listening. The desert strips away the distractions of daily life and provides a neutral space to build trust.

  • Follow-up Workshops: Six subsequent meetings focus on conflict transformation, gender roles in conflict, and Freedom of Religion or Belief (FoRB). Participants learn to recongise how gender and identity play a role in the conflict, helping them become advocates for equality.

  • Leadership Training: Equipping participants with skills to independently lead grassroots peace initiatives in their own communities. These workshops help participants to build new leadership skills, especially in non-violent ways to stand up for justice.

Making a Difference

The impact of this project reaches far beyond the initial 30 participants:

  • A Ripple Effect: Participants will take what they’ve learned back to their own neighbourhood, reaching at least 200 more women through local community projects.

  • Changing Hearts: We expect that at least 80% of the women walk away with a fundamentally more positive view of their neighbours.

  • Action for Peace: Half of the group is expected to launch their own peace initiatives, becoming active voices for reconciliation in a time when it is needed most.

Standing Together

This project directly supports Musalaha’s core mission of building and restoring relationships while advocating against injustice and mobilising for gender equality. It represents a vital effort to move beyond fatalism and victimisation toward a shared future of peace and justice.
